Het PROUD project heeft nu ook een Engelstalige folder, die overwegend in Oeganda zal worden gebruikt. U vindt de tekst en foto's hier, echter zonder de opmaak. U krijgt in kort bestek een goed beeld van het project.

PROUD UG
Services for the mentally retarded
Kabale, Uganda

PROUD UG organizes services for the mentally retarded in the town of Kabale, Uganda. The PROUD-project was started up in October 2013. It consists of 3 actions: CBR Office, the Special Class in Wise Parents school and the construction of the PROUD-center.

CBR Office

The CBR Office gives social answers to the challenge of mental retardation. We work on:

-the detection, identification, assessment and orientation of mentally retarded children in Kabale;

-individual accompaniment of children with mental retardation and referral to relevant services;

-parents group meetings for exchange and formation;

-trainings for teachers. The following packages are already available: definition of mental retardation and characteristics of the mentally retarded; curriculum for mentally retarded in nursery school age; teaching strategies;

-sensitization of the community. At this time we run an activity of sensitization of nursery schools;

-resource center services. We try to give an answer on all your questions concerning the mentally retarded; we welcome you for exchange.

Special Class

We operate a special unit for mentally retarded children within Wise Parents Daycare, Nursery and Primary School. The special class started in February 2014 in 2 small rooms. As both parties, Wise Parents and PROUD UG evaluated the experience positively,during school year 2015 the special unit will be continued and even occupy a larger space within Wise Parents school.

The mentally retarded students follow their own program, but participate also in general school activities as assembly, morning devotion and break time play. The program of the special class stresses on:

-self care: toilet behavior; to eat, drink, wash and dress independently;

-motor development: gross and fine motor skills f.e. ball games, merry-go-round, swing, slide;

-cognitive development: cognitive games related to their mental age eg making tower, jig saws etc.;

-communication and expression: stimulating the children to speak,teaching them basic vocabulary, engaging in singing, listening and playing music and

-social adaptation: by participation in group activitieseg assembly, relating to class mates, ‘home care’…

The teachers put a lot of attention in adapting the instruction to the individual learner.

Day center

PROUD UG wants to build a day center for mentally retarded children and youngsters. Therefore we acquired land in Kekubo Cell, Kirigime Ward of the Municipality of Kabale. Our plan is to build a day center that can welcome mentally retarded children in nursery and primary school age. In the future we will also offer non formal professional education to mentally retarded youngsters, boys and girls.

Partners

PROUD UG is in contact with local authorities, in particular education inspectorate. We are mainly supported by a Belgian Association called The village vzw. The village is at its time supported by the commune where it is located, Laarne-Kalken, and by the regional authorities of the Province of East Flanders.
